WORKSHEET – UNIT 1
Task 1 – List 5 qualities that a ‘good’ teacher should have and give reasons for your choices. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why?
1. Ability to motivate learners
It has been my experience that without motivation the mind just won’t obtain information. An example of this is when people are working a job they don’t enjoy; they won’t be very good at it.
2. Distinguished knowledge of his/her subject
It is very easy to pick up on someone who doesn’t know what they are talking about and once you do then your concentration goes elsewhere.
3. Ability to involve all students equally throughout a lesson
Some students are outspoken and others aren’t but all need to be involved if they wish to learn.
4. Ability to correct students without offending them or affecting their motivation
If your manner when correcting a student isn’t enthusiastic then the student might not try so hard next time or possibly not try at all.
5. Possess knowledge of student weaknesses and try to give help and individual attention where necessary
An eye for detail is important and often separates good employees from bad ones.
Task 2 – State the different roles of the teacher and give a brief explanation for each of them:
Manager or Controller
Where the teacher becomes the main resource of information
Organizer
The role in which the teacher co-ordinates class activities
Assessor
Assessing ability to a common standard amongst all students
Prompter
Allowing the student to find the correct answer with minimal assistance
Participant
Engaging from a student perspective to provide direction or balance between groups
Tutor
Providing a more personal form of support to individuals or pairs
Resource or Facilitator
To be approachable for guidance during student tasks
Model
Offering an established wealth of knowledge about the English language
Observer or Monitor
Examining the progress or outcome of class activities
Task 3 – List 5 qualities you would expect to find in a ‘good’ learner. Which of these qualities do you consider to be more important, and why?
1. A desire to learn
Students who want to learn generally will if they apply themselves
2. A willingness to listen to the language
It’s impossible to speak English if you haven’t heard it first
3. A willingness to experiment with the language
Trial and error plays an important part of any learning curve
4. An acceptance of error correction
In my opinion this shows an eagerness to move forward
5. A willingness to ask questions
Allows the student who’s asking the questions to verify their command of the language, other people listening and not asking will also learn but won’t fill in their own gaps.
Task 4 – What are some of the major differences you would expect to find between adult and young learners?
Adults
Higher attention span
More life experience
Highly motivated
Nervous
Bad habits
Young Learners
Open minded
Unwilling to take risks
Self-conscious
Receptive
Less disciplined
Task 5 – List the levels of language ability that learners are often grouped into and give a brief summation of each level:
Beginners
A visual introduction into English
Elementary
Basic sentence structures and simple topics
Low / pre-intermediate
Ability to communicate but with many errors even with basic structures
Intermediate
Can communicate on many topics but lack accuracy and fluency
Upper Intermediate
Highly motivated and can communicate on all topics but still lacking accuracy
Advanced
Often believe they have reached their peak so they require encouragement. These students are more responsible for their own learning.
Task 6 – Give as many reasons as possible why students are motivated to study English:
To assist with traveling
For their career
Ability to speak with colleagues and friends
To increase their grades
To study in a foreign country
General interest
